Could My Child Be Suffering From A Whiplash Injury?

If your child has been involved in a road traffic accident you may be feeling upset, anxious and worried about whether they have received any injuries. Whiplash is a common injury – amongst adults and children alike – and must not rule out the fact that your child could be suffering from a whiplash injury. This article looks at how a whiplash injury is caused in a child, how to know whether your child might be suffering from a whiplash injury and what symptoms they may be experiencing and what to do if you think your child may be suffering from a whiplash injury.

Whiplash, both in children and in adults, is caused when the head and neck are suddenly and forcefully thrown forwards and backwards causing the soft-tissue and ligaments in the neck to be stretched beyond their normal range of movement.

Initially, you may be feeling a sense of relief that your child appears to have ‘walked away’ from the road traffic accident without having sustained any injuries. However, you do need to be cautious and vigilant as quite often symptoms of a whiplash injury can take several hours, or even several days to appear. In addition, your child – especially if they are very young – may find it difficult to explain their symptoms to you. Very young children may simply come across as being much more tearful and restless than usual and you may find it difficult to get them to sleep.

Keep a very close eye on your child and make sure you are aware of what the symptoms of a whiplash injury can be. Common symptoms include pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders and upper back, headaches, nausea, lethargy and pins and needles. Your child may find these symptoms very hard to describe so just be aware of any change in their temperament or general well-being after the accident.

As soon as you become aware that your child may be suffering from a whiplash injury you should take them to receive medical treatment to your local A&E department or GP. (Even if your child appears injury free it is good idea to get them checked over by a GP as a matter of precaution after an accident). Your GP or A&E department will advise on how best to treat your child’s injuries. If they are old enough they may be given painkillers and you may also be advised to help them carry out gentle mobility exercises.

If your child has been involved in an accident the best thing to do, to ensure their health and safety, is to take them along to your GP to get them checked over, even if you feel that you are being over-cautious, it is better to be safe than sorry.
