Although not the only cause, car accidents are the main cause of whiplash injuries. Furthermore, the injury is usually caused by one vehicle going into the back of another vehicle. A whiplash injury is caused when the head and neck are suddenly and forcefully thrown back and forth causing damage to the soft-tissue and ligaments in the neck.
If you have been injured in a road traffic accident and have sustained a whiplash injury, you will need to ensure that you receive the correct treatment and follow the advice of your GP in order to aid your recovery. Quite often, the symptoms of whiplash are not apparent until 2 or 3 days after the accident so it is important that you return to your GP for further advice if your symptoms continue or deteriorate.
Depending on the severity of your whiplash injury, treatment may include painkillers, gentle mobility excercises or physiotherapy. It is much less common these days for those people suffering from a whiplash injury to wear a surgical collar.
