Chilean Miners Compensation Claims – 14th October 2010

I was surprised to see a large increase in the volume of traffic to our website on the 14th October 2010. I realised that something unusual had happened because the volume had increased by 100%.

On reviewing our website tracking figures I realised that the main reason for this (in fact the only reason) was that people had started typing into the search engines ‘Chilean miners compensation claims’. The Chilean miners had been trapped underground for in excess of two months and it was on the 14th October that they were all finally released through a half a mile deep shaft.

There was huge publicity and everybody was incredibly happy to see all 33 of the miners successfully released from their underground prison. What interests me is that clearly the public then wanted to know whether they would receive compensation for their ordeal underground.

In the UK, miners’ compensation claims often revolve around the following injuries:

  1. Vibration white finger (this is caused by vibrating power tools which cause ongoing pain and suffering even when the power tools are not being used);
  2. Miners knee claims (a government scheme was set up to provide compensation for miners’ knee claims including ‘beat knee’);
  3. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease.

Clearly, in the UK, the amount of mining has reduced considerably and therefore the number of claims still able to be made have decreased.

The Chilean miners might receive compensation from a government scheme or from their employer for their time underground. Thankfully, however, in the early stages after the event it seems that they have all maintained good health and should not have any long terms consequences. This was a heart lifting story and everyone was pleased to see all 33 miners make it safely to the service.
