A ship-breaking company in Lincolnshire could face industrial injuries claims after being fined for putting workers at risk of asbestos exposure.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Acetech Construction Limited didn’t carry out an adequate survey of former Polish fishing vessel The Patricia III, which had been built in the 1970s.
Scunthorpe magistrates heard that when the ship was stripped down, several employees were potentially exposed to materials which contained asbestos. Any of the workers who notice signs of asbestos poisoning may want to consider industrial injuries claims.
After the hearing, in which Acetech Construction were fined more than £3,000 (£3,400), HSE inspector Kirsty Welsh noted that "you might not know what damage has been caused by [asbestos] exposure… until much later".
